Offensive vs Defensive Care: How to Stop Managing Pain and Start Building a Resilient Body

If you've ever dealt with recurring pain, you already know the cycle: you feel something flare up, you try to calm it down, it gets better for a while, and then it comes back. That's the trap many people get stuck in - and it's exactly where the idea of offensive vs defensive care becomes useful.

In a recent conversation with Dr. Tyler Panko, we broke down the difference between simply making pain quieter and actually building a body that can handle more. The goal is not just to feel better for a day or two. The goal is to become more capable, more resilient, and less dependent on temporary fixes.

Defensive care is what most people do when something hurts. It's the "make it feel better" approach.

That can include:

  • stretching

  • massage

  • adjustments

  • dry needling

  • medication

  • taping

  • injections

These tools can absolutely help, especially in the short term. But if they're the only thing you rely on, you may end up stuck in a cycle of temporary relief without real change.

Offensive care is about making your body harder to break down.

Instead of only asking, "How do I get rid of the pain?" offensive care asks:

  • What is causing this?

  • What does my body need to handle more?

  • How do I become more resilient?

That usually means working on the basics:

  • movement

  • strength

  • breathing

  • sleep

  • stress

  • daily activity

  • mindset

The goal is not just less pain. The goal is a body that can do more.

Defensive care can help you feel better.

Offensive care helps you become better.

If you want long-term progress, the goal is not just to manage symptoms - it's to build a body that can handle more of life.
